Rare 1878 Boston Red Stockings Base Ball Club Team Cabinet Card SGC VG-EX 4.

The 1870's was an era when Baseball was still a growing adolescent with a promising future. Before becoming the National League, the National League fielded teams with the Boston Red Stockings making their debut in 1871. The squad was driven by baseball pioneer Harry Wright. This is a rare instance from the earliest years of the National League Boston Red Stockings team to include both of the Wright brothers. The team was baseballs' early dynasty with pitching star Al Spalding going 252-65 in the clubs first six seasons. Success came quickly as the team won six National Association or National League Pennants (1872, 1873, 1874, 1875, 1877 and 1878) in their first eight seasons. The Association folded only to form the National League where the team evolved into the Red Caps, then the Beaneaters and now the current Boston/Atlanta Braves. This lineage is among the longest in the history of our national pastime. In 1878, Boston would win another pennant on a 41-19 record. This elegant cabinet card showcases 11 members of that powerhouse squad and ad for the George Wright "Base Ball and Sporting Goods Company." Each man is identified below his portrait. Players include Tommy Bond, Jack Burdock, Andy Leonard, Jack Manning, John Morrill, Jim O'Rourke (HoFer), Harry Schafer, Charles "Pop" Snyder, Ezra Sutton, George Wright (HoFer) and Harry Wright (HoFer). The reverse features an ad for the "Geo. Wright Boston Club (obscured)" BASE BALL GOODS of all STYLES.

This amazing piece is extremely rare and measures 4-1/4" x 6-1/2." The mount shows wear/crease in the upper left and very mild moisture staining at the bottom but the all-important print has remained undeniably nice and is only minimally affected. The 140 year old image has yet to experience any fading. There is a full range of values and an abundance of fine detail in clothing, faces and hair. It is so rare to find a memento from the earliest years of our treasured history, produced in a time when our country as a whole was still recovering from the effects of the Civil War. For the baseball historian, this is a priceless addition to any collection large or small.
