    Description

Extremely Rare 1910-11 S74 - White Silks Ty Cobb SGC 40 VG 3 - With Helmar Cigarettes Back! Delicate to the extreme, S74 silks can be found in white or color silk advertising multiple brands of tobacco. The unique promotion includes baseball players and actresses. This auction features both the white and color versions of baseball legend Ty Cobb! Offered is a 1909 S74 satin silk with the fragile original paper backing with "Helmar Cigarettes" advertising. The approx. 1-7/8 x 3-1/2" silk has been graded SGC 40 VG 3. Flat and clean, the silk shows extremely minor fraying along top and bottom, all too common with this issue and one fine center crease. This is the only confirmed Cobb with the Helmar brand reverse on record with SGC. Based on feedback from prominent silk collectors this is one of only three (total) Helmar back S74s known in private hands. One of those three, two are Cobb. No S74 type set can be complete without one!

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
