    C. 1908 Moss Real Photo Post Card Harrisburg Giants SGC Good 2 With Spottswood Poles. The city of Harrisburg, PA has a baseball history dating back to the late 1860's. Newspaper accounts state that in 1890 Colonel William "C.W." Strothers was putting together a baseball team called the "Marines" but by 1894 newspapers were calling the team the "Giants." This would be at best thought of as a semi-professional team becoming a certified professional team circa 1903. Offered is an extremely rare real photo post card with the caption "1891 Harrisburg - Giants. 1908" with a "Moss Photo" credit in the lower right corner. Owner/manager Colonel Strothers is seated front and center. Under Strothers the Giants were successful and by 1908 were the "Colored Champions of the State." Newspaper accounts state Strothers would often bet on games and even play games where the winner would take home the gate receipts. A largely forgotten star of the team is in the back row, second from the right - outfielder Spottswood Poles. His debut was in 1906 and in June 1909, the Harrisburg Giants played the Philadelphia Giants who were called the "Colored World Champions." Philadelphia won the game and poached Poles who left with Philadelphia after the game. Poles was a speed demon on the base paths who could also bat with the best of them - both against Negro League teams where he has a .400 lifetime BA and against Major League teams where he batted .610. The offered RPPC has a July 1909 cancellation date and an ad inviting other teams to contact "the only colored team in the center part of the State" for exhibition games. There is one corner crease and ink writing as it was used as mail. Photo quality is excellent. Graded SGC Good 2. Items relating to this club from this era are very rare.
