1976 Topps Dennis Eckersley #98 PSA Gem Mint 10. 1976 Topps Dennis Eckersley #98 PSA Gem Mint 10. Dennis Eckersley's career was a tale of two roles. As a starting pitcher for the first half of his 24-year Major League seasons, he was good; as a reliever for the second half of his career, he was outstanding, and that second half of his career took him to the Hall of Fame. The right-hander started his Major League career with the Cleveland Indians in 1975 and won Rookie Pitcher of the Year honors as a starter with a 13-7 record with a 2.60 ERA. He threw a no-hitter against the California Angels in 1977. After moving to Boston, he started well, going 20-8 with a 2.99 ERA, but by 1983 had slipped to 9-13 with an ERA of 5.61 for the Red Sox. After some up-and-down years with the Chicago Cubs, Eckersley went to the Oakland Athletics for the 1987 season and became a closer. Oakland manager, Tony La Russa and pitching coach Dave Duncan were in the forefront of using late-inning relievers as 9th inning specialists. As Eck said of them in his Hall of Fame induction speech, "Not only did they change how late innings of a ball game would be played, they carved out a role that was tailor-made for my personality...." For the second half of his career, mostly with Oakland, Eckersley added 385 saves to the five he had from his early years. In a five-year span from 1988-1992, Eckersley had 220 saves, and in 1990 he gave up only five earned runs all season and had a microscopic ERA of 0.61. In 1992, he won both the AL Cy Young Award and the MVP.

Graded PSA Gem Mint 10. Offered is his rookie card debut from the '76 Topps series in grand fashion. The card even shows Eckersley in full 1970's long haircut. This card is the very best. One of nine graded Gem Mint.
