1923-24 Nacionales Cigarros Cristobal Torriente #43 SGC 60 EX 5 - Pop One, None Higher! By all accounts, Cristóbal Torriente was a five tools talent not unlike Willie Mays with a strong and the ability to hit a baseball with great power. Born in Cuba, Torriente baseball career started in the early 1910's J.L. Wilkinson's "All-Nations" team. By 1913 he was a member of the Cuban Stars. Hi Negro league career began with the Chicago American Giants in 1919. They won three Negro National League pennants in 1920, 1921 and 1922 where he won the batting title in 1920 and again in 1923. His legend would be cemented in history as a member of the The New York Giants (Cuban League) which for a short time had none other than Babe Ruth on their roster for a nine-game series against Torriente's Almendares squad. In the batter's box, Cristóbal bested "The Bambino" including home runs. "The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract" listed Torriente as the 67th greatest baseball player... ever.

His years playing in the Cuban and the Negro leagues lasted from 1912 to 1928 and 1932. A immense threat in the batter's box, he batted .333 in the Negro Leagues and .353 batting average in the Cuban League. For eleven of his years in Cuba he hit over .300. His teams won six Cuban Championships in those 13 years. While primarily an outfielder, Torriente took the mound and racked up a 21-14 W-L record for a .600% winning percentage. Imagine the damage he could have done in the Major Leagues had he had the chance. Sadly, he died young, only 44, due to alcoholism and tuberculosis. Torriente was one of the first ten players honored by the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939 and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006.

Graded SGC 60 EX 5. The finest SGC example from a total pop of only eight.
