Description

1923-1924 Billiken Cigars Cristobal Torriente PSA 1 Poor (MK). The tobacco card promotions issues of the 1920's that showcase players of the Cuban winter league are as highly fascinating as they are fun to collect. The two major reasons are their rarity, face it, it's nice owning a card others can just look at, and they contain players, and their portraits, not found in any other promotion. This card is the perfect example. The 1923-1924 Billiken series is overall extremely rare and gives the hobby one of a handful of appearances by Cuban born Hall of Famer Cristobal Torriente. A hitter ranking among Eddie Collins, Cap Anson and Nap Lajoie, his best seasons were in the early 1920's where he often led in triples, home runs, hits, stolen bases and doubles, etc. He was an integral part in leading the American Giants to three consecutive Negro League championships. Torriente retired with a .333 batting average with the Negro Leagues and an eye opening .352 batting average in the Cuban League. He was finally inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006. For corner wear and creasing, plus a red ink "2" and a pencil mark on the reverse, the card is graded PSA Poor 1 (MK). One of only three total cards graded to date.
