Description

1921 Standard Biscuit Co. D350-3 Babe Ruth SGC VG-EX+ 4.5 -- the Superior Example of Two in PSA & SGC Populations! In a collecting hobby dominated by the traditions of tobacco and bubble gum, the humble "D-Card," nomenclature designating original distribution through the sale of baked goods, stands as a tiny but important footnote. One suspects that the perishable nature of baked goods was the reason that so few bakers threw their caps into the trading card ring--once the bread went stale, the loaf or biscuits were simply discarded (no pun intended), wasting their cardboard commemoratives. Each surviving today in the thinnest of populations.

Appropriating the visuals of the American Caramel Series of 80 (E121) set of the same year, the Standard Biscuit is vastly more scarce. Naturally, the Babe is far and away the key card in the set. Interestingly, while the caption reads "Babe Ruth, R.F. - New York Americans," the image is of the Babe pitching in a Red Sox uniform, a photograph that would be worth a mint in any vintage format. This is the sole specimen in the SGC population. There is just one Ruth in the PSA census too, at Poor 1.

Our catalog imagery should convince all viewers that the SGC VG-EX+ 4.5 rating seems conservative, as light corner touches are really all that provides evidence of a century of storage. Registration and obverse centering are as strong as one could dare to dream.
