1917 E135 Collins-McCarthy Rogers Hornsby Rookie (Blank Back) #80 SGC EX 5. From a new to the hobby collection passed down and seemingly untouched for over 100 years. What makes this find so special is it yielded a nearly-complete set and every card had a blank back. It certainly seems like this set was available as a mail-in offer or a very limited number of sets were collated to give to baseball loving employees or clients who would appreciate the lengthy list of stars and Hall of Famers.Offered is an insufferably scarce period tribute to "The Rajah" -- hitter extraordinaire and two-time NL Triple Crown winner. This rookie card was produced by the San Francisco-based Collins-McCarthy Candy Co., the same firm that has been highly praised as the maker of the "Zeenut" issues. Although similar in obverse design to several better-known series fashioned by East Coast manufacturers during the mid- to late-1910s, this ambitious, 200-card Collins-McCarthy production is particularly coveted among advanced enthusiasts as the only release that included Major League players and not P.C.L. subjects. A century later, regionally limited distribution has resulted in frustrating scarcity of the standard issue cards let alone those with blank backs. Despite the delicate card stock, our example has survived extremely well. Graded SGC EX 5. One of only two cards graded by SGC confirmed with a blank back! Not only is this the highest graded of the pair it is the only card with a numeric grade, the other is an "AUT.". We can only imagine the hours of appreciation this card will receive by what will be only the second person to have ownership.
