Description

1917 E135 Collins-McCarthy Joe Jackson (Blank Back) #82 SGC EX 5 - Pop One, None Superior! It's finally time to identify Shoeless Joe as "a future Hall of Famer," as the recent passing of fellow banished legend Pete Rose has inspired Major League Baseball to show mercy upon the pair of black sheep. The provided trading card finds the most famous member of the Eight Men Out in much happier times, engaged in a 1917 season that would find his Chicago White Sox claiming what would prove to be their final World Championship of the twentieth century.

This issue was produced by the same San Francisco-based candy maker that is most famous for its various Zeenut issues released between 1911 and 1938, which featured local Pacific Coast League subjects-notably the earliest card featuring Joe DiMaggio. Here, the focus is the Major Leagues, with this subject trailing only Babe Ruth in value and desirability. This spectacular specimen stands alone atop the SGC population for both blank- and advertising-backed versions. Check the online pop report and you'll see that only a tiny handful of cards from all 200 subjects have reached this lofty height.

Minimal corner wear is the only issue to report, as registration is crisp, centering is quite strong, and surfaces are clean with nice gloss on the front. It's an absolute stunner that stands firmly in the top one percent of all Dead Ball Era trading cards. Graded SGC EX 5.
