1917 Collins-McCarthy Rogers Hornsby #80 SGC 50 VG/EX 4. An impossibly scarce period tribute to "The Rajah" -- hitter extraordinaire and two-time N.L. Triple Crown winner -- this collectible was produced by the San Francisco-based Collins-McCarthy Candy Co. (the concern that has been highly praised as the maker of the "Zeenut" issues). Although similar in obverse design to several better-known series fashioned by East Coast manufacturers during the mid- to late-1910s, this ambitious, 200-card Collins-McCarthy production (termed "E135" in The American Card Catalog) is particularly coveted among advanced enthusiasts. (E135 was the only C-M release that extended to Major League players -- the company's other issues addressed only P.C.L. subjects -- and its regionally limited distribution brought about frustrating rarity.) This inviting candy card's photographic portrayal shows Hornsby's poise as a fielder, capturing the future Hall of Famer as he fires from the infield.

A "1 of 1" at its tier, this example is the very best among just a half-dozen comprising SGC's total census in the Hornsby entry. Although crafted of thin and unforgiving cardstock, close examination of the card yields only routine and inexcessive corner wear (most observable at the top-edge aspects) and concedes no perceptible abrasion on its surfaces. An extremely challenging and esoteric Hall of Fame collectible, placed at a unique, better-than-respectable level of condition.
