Description
The only uncancelled example in the PSA population!
1916 Morehouse Baking Babe Ruth Rookie #151 PSA Poor 1. The
1916 Morehouse Baking baseball card series-formally known as the
M101-4/M101-5 (D352) set-is a bakery-issued variant of the popular
Sporting News card series, produced by Felix Mendelssohn and
rebranded by Morehouse Baking of Lawrence, Massachusetts. Rather
than Sporting News ads, these cards feature a distinctive back
advertising Sunlight Bread, with a promotion offering children a
baseball-and-bat set or jump rope upon submitting fifty different
cards.Remarkably, just sixty-six cards from the entirety of the Morehouse Baking issue appear in the PSA population at the time of this writing, and this auction contains several of the more important entries from that deeply endangered species. But certainly it goes without saying that the rookie card of the greatest figure in baseball history is the most spectacular.
In point of fact, there are three Morehouse Ruths in the PSA population, but the other two are entered with a "Cancelled" modifier due to the stamping of that word on the verso. This is almost certainly related to the aforementioned redemption policy that compelled children to trade cards for toys. We would argue that the solitary status of this unstamped example makes it one of the most dazzling Ruth rookies in the hobby.
While the card comes by its PSA Poor 1 grade honestly, with a couple horizontal creases, corner rounding and a small degree of related paper loss, it's still a visually appealing specimen for its bold printing of the famous pitching pose at obverse and ultra-rare advertising at verso. Though it may not enjoy the outrageous state of preservation of the Ruth #151 Sporting News cards that have commanded strong seven-figure prices in past Heritage sales, the opportunity to possess a true unicorn of The Standard Catalog should prove hugely tempting to the cultured collector. Graded PSA Poor 1.
