1916 M101-5 Sporting News Jim Thorpe (Blank Back) #176 PSA NM-MT 8 - Pop Two, One Higher. Jim Thorpe's exploits on the gridiron have become the stuff of folklore, making it impossible to calculate the ratio of fact to exaggeration, but there is no question that he was the most talented football star of his age. The stories of his halftime drop kick field goals from the fifty-yard line to entertain the fans may not be gospel, but his three World Championships with the Canton Bulldogs certainly are, and when the National Football League was founded in 1920, it was Thorpe who was chosen League president by the charter members. Parallels could accurately be drawn between Thorpe and his iconic baseball contemporary Babe Ruth, each a "diamond in the rough," emerging from the reservation and the orphanage respectively, to establish themselves as the greatest talents (and gate attractions) of their day. Each also met his end too soon, as a result of unhealthy living.

Graded PSA NM-MT 8. One of two cards graded NM-MT with one (a lone 8.5) rated higher. His tenure with various sports/teams resulted in his appearing on precious trading cards. Offered is a surprisingly nice example from the M101-5 series from 1916 depicting the athletic legend with the New York Giants. Thorpe was a three-year veteran but played for Milwaukee in 1916 and would return to MLB the following season. The full-figure portrait is crisp and problem-free. Centering is a sliver to the left, corners show minimal amounts of wear. The back is clean. This is one of eleven M101-5 Blank Backs on the PSA census. Jim Thorpe is regraded as one of the top athletes of the 20th Century. This is a must have card that appears in only the most advanced vintage collections.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
