1916 M101-5 Sporting News (Blank Back) Joe Jackson #86 PSA VG-EX 4. He was six years old when his family moved to Brandon Mill on the outskirts of Greenville, South Carolina, a company town centered around a textile factory where he worked twelve-hour shifts as a "linthead," sweeping the floors as the machinery whirred and clanged around him. It was a life punctuated by hard work and very limited funds, with education one of the many luxuries the Jackson family was unable to afford. A god-send was the mill's baseball team that would ultimately prove to be the key that would unlock the door to a better life for "Shoeless Joe." Not since his earliest days with Philadelphia did the star slugger experience a slow start as seen in his first games in a White Sox uniform. In 45 games, he batted "only" .272 and leaving sportswriters to speculate if Jackson's best days were behind him. They were wrong as Shoeless Joe rebounded with a brilliant 1916 campaign when this card saw circulation, leading the American League with twenty-three triples, 293 total bases and a .341 batting average. Graded PSA VG-EX 4. Of confirmed M101-5 Blank Backs on the PSA census, this is the lone card in VG-EX with nine rated higher. The offered card exhibits mild reverse toning, which is common with the issue and a close to perfectly centered portrait. There certainly can be found a moral considering his fervent following that a simple man can have an extraordinary place in history.
