    Description

1916 M101-5 Sporting News (Blank Back) Joe Jackson #86 PSA NM-MT 8. He's one of the most complicated legends of our National Pastime, an illiterate child laborer from the mills of South Carolina who would emerge as one of the greatest ballplayers the world would ever see. But that popularity would ultimately fall to ignominy as Shoeless Joe was swept up in the greatest scandal in Major League history, sentenced by Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis to a term of banishment that is now approaching its centennial. But if baseball itself hasn't yet forgiven Jackson, the majority of baseball historians, and certainly hobbyists in the collectibles realm, have opened their arms and wallets for the famed Black Sox conspirator.

Jackson rose to prominence in the years following the release of the hobby's greatest and most populous tobacco issues, so he's unusually scarce in cardboard format among twentieth century players with more than a decade of Major League experience. Just ten representations from this blank-backed M101-5 Sporting News issue have ever been assessed by the experts at PSA, with only one equal and none superior. Sharp corners, clean registration and balanced centering are the keys to success here. The last major auction offering of this card in NM-MT 8 condition was nearly seventeen years ago!
