1916 M101-5 Sport News (Blank Back) Walter Johnson #90 PSA NM-MT 8 - Pop One, None Higher! Walter Johnson won 417 games, with no modern age pitcher higher. And now available is a Big Card featuring the "Big Train" in the 1916 M101-5 Sporting News Walter Johnson #90 NM-Mt 8, Pop 1, with none higher. What accounts for Johnson's speed on his fastball, a pitch that Ty Cobb said made him "flinch"? Johnson himself seems to feel he was born with it, saying from the first time he picked up a ball, "It felt natural." There's another factor. Most human beings have an arm span equal to their height, making near perfect symmetry. Johnson's height was 6'1-1/2", meaning 73- ½" inches. His arm span was 78-1/2" inches. Thus, his extremely long arms gave him the ability to whip the ball to the plate at incredible speed. Johnson not only pitched fast, he pitched for a long time, spending 21 years in the Majors, all with the Washington Senators. He had a dozen 20-win seasons, had 3,509 strikeouts, and won the pitching Triple Crown three times, and was the American League MVP twice. He pitched in two World Series and won the deciding Seventh Game of the 1924 Series against the New York Giants by throwing four innings of scoreless relief. Johnson was one of five inaugural greats first selected for the Hall of Fame in 1936.

These Sporting News cards were premiums meant to increase circulation. They contain a sepia photo on a 1-5/8" by 3" card. Graded PSA NM-MT 8. Of a total Pop of just 6, this card stands alone as the highest graded.
