Description

1916 M101-4 Sporting News Ray Schalk (Blank Back) #154 PSA EX-MT 6 - Pop Three, One Higher For two years, Cracker Jack ruled the baseball card market despite their 1915 effort being, for the most part, a reboot which marked a diminished emphasis of selling cards with candy to kids. That all changed in 1916 when photographer Felix Mendelsohn marketed a roster of 200 different baseball players to firms that sold products that kids and parents would need as opposed to just like. Now clothing stores, department stores, bakeries, food shops, sports publications, even a brewery (for dad), could advertise in this way. It also seems a sponsor could buy the rights to all 200 players or possibly only a portion thereof. This auction features a high grade 200-card complete M101-4 set with "The Sporting News" brand backs or a blank back. This remarkable set is a PSA Hall of Fame Award winner as well as a nine-time PSA Yearly Certificate Award winner ranking #1 All Time Finest on the PSA Set Registry with a 7.17 GPA with bonuses!

Offered is card #154 featuring Ray Schalk. This card is a blank back variant of the M101-4 "The Sporting News" series which has been graded PSA EX-MT 6. There are currently only eight total examples noted on the PSA pop report with an ad less blank back. This card is one of only three examples graded EX-MT, only one has rated higher.
