1916 M101-4 Sporting News Babe Ruth #151 PSA EX-MT 6. A fantastic rookie-era collectible, honoring the sport's highest-profile player! This was one of the nation's first glimpses of the great Ruth, a depiction characterized by a Red Sox uniform, as well as posture and captioning that proclaimed the young athlete a "Pitcher." Future glory wasn't yet apparent - although changes of venue and responsibilities would soon illuminate that quality - but the strength of appreciation for this rarity in later years has more than compensated.

Ruth was just one member of a 200-man cast at the time these black-and-white collectibles were released around the country by a number of promoters. This "Sporting News"-backed version is among the issue's most popular, and it's hotly pursued - with justification - by all card hobbyists who wish to achieve a full measure of credibility in their vintage holdings. An early card of Ruth enjoys "must-have" status, and pitifully few superior examples are available to answer the perpetual and insatiable demand.

This exceptionally well-centered piece stands as one of just two at its tier (four higher) within a ten-card total census recorded in PSA's Population Report. Its photograph reflects uncommonly sharp focus and depth, and no print lines (at the typical left-knee position or elsewhere) intrude on its splendor. A few fibers askew at the edges and corners uphold the piece's professional grading assessment, but these are entirely unobtrusive and certainly don't distract the viewer. The card's back carries a richly inked advertisement for The Sporting News, and a faint, amber-colored spot of toning is barely evident at the top edge.
