Description

1916 Herpolsheimer Co. Babe Ruth Rookie #151 PSA Fair 1.5 -- One of Just Five PSA Examples! The obverse image is one of the most famous of the pre-war era, though don't confuse that fact with the suggestion that any card bearing it is common, as the precise opposite is true. That vast chasm between the slender supply and the monumental demand for the rookie card of our national pastime's most important practitioner has fueled sky-high prices for all variants--the Sporting News M101-4 and 5, the Famous & Barr, Morehouse Baking and Gimbel's among them. But this particular back--Herpolsheimer Co. Boy's Fashion Shop of Grand Rapids, Michigan--stands among the very rarest. Just five exist at any grade in the PSA population.

Heritage recently sold the finest of that tiny census--a PSA NM 7 example--for just over $1.4 million, and while this specific example falls much more in line with typical condition of century-old trading cards than that miraculous predecessor, the fact that all PSA examples could be counted on a single hand provides essential context. This is an extremely rare opportunity to join a truly exclusive club of elite Babe Ruth trading card collectors.

We'll allow our high-resolution online lot photography provide its "thousand words" of a condition report, as the old saying about pictures goes, although we feel compelled to draw attention to the fine centering that even some seven-figure Ruth rookies have lacked. Graded PSA Fair 1.5.
