Description

Our first offering since the end of Shoeless Joe's banishment!

1915 Cracker Jack Joe Jackson #103 PSA VG 3. If we were the gambling type, we'd wager that this man and Pete Rose will enter the Baseball Hall of Fame before the end of the decade, their lifetime bans lifted by Commissioner Rob Manfred earlier this year following the passing of Charlie Hustle. While this eventual enshrinement could reasonably be considered a boon for future valuation, these are not men whose supreme significance to the sport has been overshadowed by their misdeeds. For Shoeless Joe, the scandal coming four years after the release of this card established him as a sort of storybook outlaw.

He showcases the left-handed swing that Babe Ruth claimed to emulate in the vivid artwork commanding the card obverse, the colors remaining as bright as the day of production. We spot the residue of Cracker Jack candy coating at lower right corner, and some more of that on verso, but this fault is so common for the Cracker Jack issues of the mid-1910's that savvy collectors quite properly accept it. Viewers will also note an easterly shift in centering.

But as one of just 125 entries in the PSA population, the rarity of the subject card overwhelms any criticism, and the aesthetics remain superior to the technical assessment of PSA VG 3.
