Description

A stunner from Shoeless Joe...

1915 Cracker Jack Joe Jackson #103 PSA NM 7. It took the greatest scandal in the history of our National Pastime to redefine Joe Jackson. He had been, for the last full decade of the Dead Ball Era, simply the greatest hitter on the planet, a distinction assigned to him by those most qualified to do so, the men who aspired to the title themselves. But where legends like Cobb and Williams turned a scientific eye to the process, deconstructing that fragment of a second that separates success from failure into parts far too small for the mere mortal to see, Jackson's approach was far less cerebral. An illiterate child laborer from the rural South, he was the prototypical "natural," the beneficiary of a gift from God that would be invoiced with a debt of ignominy only forgiven earlier this year, upon the death of fellow exile Pete Rose.

The passage of a century since the Black Sox scandal has done little to quiet the debate over culpability, and compelling evidence of Jackson's innocence survives in his 1919 World Series stat line. Clearly the loss of all key figures in the scandal has eliminated any hope for a definitive answer.

Like the fabled Black Sox outfielder himself, Cracker Jack cards were largely a victim of circumstance, challenged by an array of factors limiting healthy survival, from the sticky contents of its original packaging to the century of time's assault. The presented specimen has navigated that array of obstacles with aplomb, earning an impressive PSA NM 7 grade from the hobby's leading service, a designation that places it in a population of fourteen with just twenty-one above.
