    Population two, only two superior!

1915 Cracker Jack Honus Wagner #68 PSA NM-MT+ 8.5. The most faithful servant of the Pittsburgh Pirates in franchise history with over a half century in uniform, the noble Honus Wagner is likewise the team's most decorated star and its primary contribution to the game's pantheon. An inaugural class Hall of Fame inductee with the likes of Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth, Wagner figures heavily into any debate of ultimate baseball supremacy where these legends are discussed. "You can have your Cobbs, your Lajoies, your Chases, your Bakers," Hall of Fame manager John McGraw once expressed, "but I'll take Wagner as my pick of the greatest."

We find the Old Dutchman living up to that adjective here, having turned forty-one several weeks before the start of the 1915 season. He'd become the oldest player ever to hit a grand slam in July of that year, a record that would stand until a forty-three year old Tony Perez displaced him in 1985. But if the wily veteran was showing his age in the closing chapters of his playing career, the same could not be said for the offered commemorative, a trading card that has sprinted past its centennial with barely a hitch in its stride.

A condition report allows us to do little more than hurl superlatives, as the card presents better than most of the cards did upon their original birth from Cracker Jack packages in 1915 when sticky caramel was a common danger. The presented representation is virtually indistinguishable from its state of condition upon original printing, clean and sharp-cornered, and even free of the centering problems endemic to the issue. Only two specimens appear on the PSA population chart at this level, bested by only a pair of Mint 9's.
