Description
A budding Babe in Beantown
1915 Boston Red Sox with Rookie Babe Ruth Real Photo Postcard PSA VG+ 3.5. He was just twenty years old at the time this postcard was produced, and 710 home runs away from the career total that would stand for nearly four decades after his retirement. Though Babe Ruth's remarkable slugging skills were a novelty, to be sure, it was the eighteen-and-eight pitching record recorded during this official rookie season of 1915 that made the youngster a fan favorite at Fenway. Spectacular pitching, in fact, was the pathway to the pennant for this Red Sox team, with all five starters recording a winning percentage of .682 or better, and an earned run average of 2.44 or lower. In the Babe's greatest baseball foil, and Ty Cobb's talented Tigers team, the Red Sox found their strongest contender for the American League flag, but Boston earned a Fall Classic appearance by a two and a half game margin over the 100-victory Detroit squad. It was Ruth himself who earned the team's 101st win in the bottom half of an October 6th doubleheader to clinch the pennant. The World Series would launch two days later at the Baker Bowl, home park of the National League Champion Philadelphia Phillies.
We suspect that this gorgeous real photo postcard greeted hometown fans at Braves Field for the third and fourth games of the World Series, the National League stadium borrowed due to a seating capacity superior to the newly-constructed Fenway Park. Text at the bottom edge of the team image suggests production prior to the team's World Championship realization, reading, "The Boston Red Sox--American League Champions--Season 1915."
Each Red Sox player is pictured in the classic team shot, and identified with surname and position in bold printed text. We find Ruth at center of the back row. A light bend at the upper right corner, confined entirely to the blank border area, accounts for the bulk of points lost here, as the image area is beyond reproach and the postcard reverse is unusually and desirably free of handwriting. Only eight examples have ever been submitted to PSA, and just three finer.
