Description
1914 T222 Fatima Walter Johnson PSA Poor 1. Standing shoulder to shoulder next to the names Cobb, Wagner and Jackson is the Washington Senators' mound master Walter Johnson. So accomplished at his craft, Johnson was one of the first five players to be inducted into Baseball's Hall of Fame in 1936. How the lanky farm-boy was somehow able to generate such velocity with a smooth side-armed motion that baffled and certainly terrified opposing batters. In the blink of an eye... it was over. New York Highlanders outfielder Birdie Cree provided his own methodology for handling Johnson's speed: "When you see the arm start forward, swing." Even the immensely talented batter Ty Cobb quipped, "His fastball looked about the size of a watermelon seed and it hissed at you as it passed." He was a tall and unassuming sight on the mound until he threw his 90+ mph fastball with the speed of an airplane and the precision of the most skilled surgeon. The T222 Fatima Players series was an ambitious premium promotion for the era. The set was produced with the same fragile photo paper that Fatima Team collectors will recognize. This is one of the keys to any Walter Johnson collection as it rests comfortably very high on the list of the rarest Johnson collectibles. As is common with this issue, this example has creasing, surface crackling, small pinholes and a piece of tape keeping two sides of a tear in place. The corners show only light amounts of wear and the image quality is very nice, a key factor for these real photo issues. To date, PSA has only graded a total of four T222s with Walter's commanding full-figure portrait with neither SGC nor PSA grading any example higher than a "3".View Certification and Population Details from PSA
