1914 E224 Texas Tommy Type 2 Honus Wagner SGC 80 EX/MT 6 - Single Finest Example for the Entire Issue! When learning that this ultra-rare issue earned that characteristic due in large part to its regional distribution, the logical conclusion would be that the Lone Star State was ground zero for the promotion, but you'd find yourself about 1,500 miles off the mark. In truth, this fifteen-card set derives from the Oakland, California area, where a local confectioner packaged two variations of the cardboard commemoratives alongside its sugary wares.

Most collectors would consider this Type 2 variant to be the more desirable of the two, as the obverse image is a real photograph, whereas the Type 1 image is printed. We'll happily give up the printed biography on verso of the Type 1 for the superior image quality of blank-backed Type 2's like this one. The Old Dutchman was beginning to live up to his name when this rare beauty rolled off the North California presses, but he'd make his fortieth year of life a memorable one, turning the 3,000 Hit Club into a twosome when he joined Cap Anson on June 9, 1914. We get a great look at that enormously productive swing right here.

Only thirty-four examples from both Types of all fifteen subjects appear within an SGC slab, and this is not just the only Wagner card to soar to EX/MT 6 altitude, but the only card from the entire issue to achieve the feat. So for those collectors looking to secure some of the safest bragging rights in the cardboard universe, this spectacularly scarce specimen should make for a most attractive target.
