By far the superior of two known examples!

1914 E224 Texas Tommy Christy Mathewson Type 2 Blank Back PSA EX-MT 6. It stands alone in the Lone Star State atop the population reports, but admittedly it's not much of a fight. The hobby is aware of only two examples of this spectacularly rare trading card, and the other is graded SGC 20 Fair 1.5. We'd be thrilled to own either, quite honestly, but the victor in this auction is virtually assured of eternal hobby supremacy, as the full graded population of all player representations from this Type 2 set is ten.

You'll find few trading card issues more thoroughly steeped in mystery, a fact which is not particularly surprising considering how few collectors have ever seen an example, or are even aware of their existence. The origin has been traced back to candy bars bearing the "Texas Tommy" name, produced by the Cardinet Candy Company.

That's it. That's the entirety of the known history.

So few offerings in this remarkable Platinum Night auction can match this lot for pure intrigue, and virtually no trading card is less likely to reappear on the auction block. The extraordinarily fine condition of this representation thus feels like pure overkill in light of its extreme scarcity. This is a real photo format--you can easily see the metallic gleam of its silver gelatin construction when you hold the card at an angle to a light source. The borderless beauty exhibits only light corner touches to bear witness to more than a century of existence. Even the blank back is clean of any distracting faults.
