Description

1914 Cracker Jack Ty Cobb #30 PSA EX 5. Feared by most, but respected by all, Tyrus Raymond Cobb was the Machiavellian ideal of the early game, forging his Cooperstown bronze in the fires of natural ability and gritted-teeth determination. Though Cobb's staggering career hits tally of 4,191 was ultimately eclipsed, many batting records remain in the Georgia Peach's sole possession to this day, most notably the .366 career batting average. In 1914, Cobb was at the middle of one of the greatest decades experienced by any player from any era. From 1910-1919 Cobb amassed 1,948 hits, batted .386 (his .368 in '14 is actually his lowest for the term) while striking out only 331 times! Although there was nothing that the word "sweet" would accurately describe the Georgia Peach, he ranks as the first or second most desirable entry from the hobby's most popular candy issue. The bold coloring and artful portraiture that characterize the set are entirely evident and tailor-made to honor baseball's finest.

In 1914, cards circulated inside boxes of Cracker Jacks alone. High grade cards from the immensely popular 1915 edition actually exist thanks to a mail-in offer by Cracker Jack. No such option was available in 1914 leaving excellent or better examples in precious few quantities. Graded PSA EX 5, this is one of a dozen to rank at the excellent level with eleven rating higher. An impressive example overall, surfaces show minor areas of staining which can be described as very light. The vertical column of stray printer's ink on the obverse both have failed to greatly impact the visual appeal. The fragile-thin paper has worn at the corners which is our harshest criticism. His portrait is a combination of bold hues and precision registration leaving sharp details of his now his classic batting pose. A great example of one of Cobb's best card collectibles.
