Description
1914 Cracker Jack Joe Jackson #103 PSA Authentic.Cracker Jack "Ball Players" of 1914.
The first Golden Age of trading cards came about in 1909 and lasted for roughly a decade. Hundreds of insert cards promoting mainly tobacco and candy products found their way inside packs of candy, cigarettes and food products. More than a century later no product developed a deep connection with baseball as did "Cracker Jacks." Although surrounded by dozens of bright and colorful issues of a couple dozen to many hundreds of cards per promotion, the single color (fire engine red) backgrounds grab your attention and prove the "simple is more" marketing philosophy. Placing cards without protection satisfied the attention of consumers but also left cards with unsightly stains to the fragile paper stock. That initial issue was complete at 144 cards. Card #'s 72-144 are more difficult to acquire, which census numbers bear out, and is that the result of falling sales with cards coming out of cigarette packs all shiny and new, cards spotted with sugar might have been a disappointment or backlash from the American and National League teams possibly threatening to pull Cracker Jacks in their stadiums. Regardless, today the cards are treasured additions and resonate with a nostalgic appeal. This auction features a near nest of this iconic issue packed with Dead-Ball era stars and future Hall of Famers.
"Shoeless" Joe Jackson during the 1910's had been one of the Dead-Ball eras greatest hitters on the planet. It is a distinction assigned to him by those men who aspired to earn that title themselves. Where legends like Cobb and Williams turned a scientific eye to the process, deconstructing that fragment of a second and inch that separates success from failure into parts far too small for the mere mortal to see, Jackson's approach was far less cerebral and all natural. The child laborer from the rural South was the prototypical "natural," the beneficiary of a gift from the gods.
Encapsulated PSA Authentic. The PSA total population stands at just fifty. Considering this is one of those cards' collectors will slab in any condition, just fifty examples are confirmed after more than 110 years is quite eyebrow raising. Like the fabled Black Sox outfielder himself, '14 Cracker Jack cards are largely victims of circumstance. Challenged by an array of factors limiting healthy survival, from the sticky contents of its original packaging to the century of time's assault. Our offered example displays soiling toning, creases, corner wear and a triangle shaped portion missing at the bottom, middle-center. Most collectors will never have one in any condition in their collections. Based on the current market for this card, condition doesn't seem to be of the utmost importance.
