Description

1914 Cracker Jack Honus Wagner #68 PSA VG-EX+ 4.5 - Pop One, Five Higher. Honus Wagner was a Hall of Fame shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates whose ultra-rare T206 card brought the baseball card hobby into mainstream circles. He was known as "The Flying Dutchman" and captured eight National League batting titles during his impressive career in which he compiled a lifetime batting average of .328 after registering 3,420 hits over his 21 seasons in the Major Leagues. Aside from his personal statistics, he also led the Pirates to the 1909 World Series championship after beating Ty Cobb's AL Champion Detroit Tigers, four games to three. To cap off his incredible résumé, Wagner was the very first shortstop ever inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, going in as part of the 1936 inaugural class.

Presented is a very rare 1914 Cracker Jack card that provides a side profile image of Wagner as his prolific career was winding down. Part of the set that boasted 144 subjects, card #68 was an extremely popular one among kids who needed their fill of the Cracker Jack sweet consisting of molasses-flavored, caramel-coated pop corn. Because of that reality, finding any of the cards in respectable fashion from more than 110 years ago is a dream come true. This specific example shows outstanding color, minimal surface wear, four good corners and a clean reverse. This card, which shows Wagner just three years from retirement, is a classic issue that would make a fine addition to any serious Cracker Jack collection. Graded PSA VG-EX+ 4.5. Of the 51 examples found in the PSA Pop Report, this is the only card graded VERY GOOD-EXCELLENT+ with five rated higher.
