1914 Cracker Jack Frank Chance #99 PSA VG 3 (MK).Cracker Jack "Ball Players" of 1914.
The first Golden Age of trading cards came about in 1909 and lasted for roughly a decade. Hundreds of insert cards promoting mainly tobacco and candy products found their way inside packs of candy, cigarettes and food products. More than a century later no product developed a deep connection with baseball as did "Cracker Jacks." Although surrounded by dozens of bright and colorful issue of a couple dozen to many hundreds of cards per promotion, the single color (fire engine red) backgrounds grab your attention and prove the "simple is more" marketing philosophy. Placing cards without protection satisfied the attention of consumers but also left cards with unsightly stains to the fragile paper stock. That initial issue was complete at 144 cards. Card #'s 72-144 are more difficult to acquire, which census numbers bear out, and is that the result of falling sales with cards coming out of cigarette packs all shiny and new, cards spotted with sugar might have been a disappointment or backlash from the American and National League teams possibly threatening to pull Cracker Jacks in their stadiums. Regardless, today the cards are treasured additions and resonate with a nostalgic appeal. This auction features a near nest of this iconic issue packed with Dead-Ball era stars and future Hall of Famers.
Offered is Hall of Famer Frank Chance with the New York Yankees who is featured on card #99. Chance became the most famous of the few who made an appearance in the 1914 edition but due to his departure from the Majors midway through the New York Yankees' 1914 season it signaled a stop to the production of this card. Teammate Hal Chase made his Cracker jack debut on card #99 in their 1915 production. Graded PSA VG 3 (MK). One of forty-nine total graded by PSA. Eight cards are graded VG (two with qualifiers) with seventeen rated higher.
