Description
1914 Cracker Jack Del Pratt #93 PSA Good 2. Almost secretively nestled among the 144 subjects that comprise the 1914 Cracker Jack series are names that find their way into collections far less often than most others. It should come as no surprise that these scarcities are within the second half of the set. Creating a list of "Fewest Submissions" one notices that eleven of the top twenty range from #'s 76 to 96. The SGC census shows this range accounts for nine of their top twenty fewest submitted cards. A famous name on that list is HoF pitching legend Christy Mathewson with 20 examples confirmed by PSA and that is a "high" total for this range. Another famous rarity is Del Pratt of the St. Louis Browns. Other than both being major league baseball players, interestingly enough both attended college from a time only a percentage of baseball players had the means to pursue higher education. Exactly why he is so rare has yet to be answered. Oddly, both men appear "in action" in the 1914 edition and as close-up portraits in the 1915 version. It certainly couldn't have anything to do with their playing careers. Pratt played for 13 seasons and massed 1,996 hits and a lifetime .292 batting average. The rarity of the Mathewson card is so much more documented since after all, it is Christy Mathewson. Whatever the answer may be we do know this card is one of biggest challenges facing the hobbyist who dares to attempt to complete a 1914 E145-1 set.Presented is one of only eleven total examples graded by PSA to date. SGC can add only eight others leaving the known population of both major services under twenty! Graded PSA Good 2, there are three copies at the Good level with a handful grading higher. Staining is always an issue with cards from this series and thankfully this card does display a totally reasonable amount. The corner wear is well in line with this grade level, wrinkles or creases are limited to corner areas. The detailed illustration is affected by a small spot of surface marring but remains strong thanks to colors that have remained rich and saturated. This is a rare chance to get one very important step closer to completing your '14 set.
