    Description

1914 Cracker Jack Christy Mathewson #88 PSA Poor 1. On Independence Day of this year, the great Christy Mathewson shut out the Phillies in the second game of a Polo Grounds doubleheader to notch his 350th career victory. With Babe Ruth nothing more than a promising prospect at the close of 1914, and Ty Cobb a now brilliant but unlovable superstar, it was Mr. Mathewson who held the collective hearts of baseball fans nationwide at the time he appeared on this rarely found Cracker Jack card. Mathewson would appear in the 1915 series but this attractive horizontal pitching pose would be replaced by a formal portrait of Factoryville, PAs native son. As a one year only issue, today this card is among the most difficult Cracker Jack cards to acquire although there is no confirmed reason why. It is revered for its subject and rarity. It is admired for the creative interplay between a pitching Mathewson and the "Cracker Jack" and "Ball Players" copy, all set off by a rich red background.

Graded PSA Poor 1. A review of the PSA census shows just twenty-five total entries, counting any qualified grades as well! Issued in boxes of baseball's adopted snack, the card has survived with product staining, soiling and creases. Some may bemoan the "poor" label but truthfully, this card was "loved". A prize for Cracker Jack collector and Mathewson enthusiast alike!
