Description
1912 La Azora Cigars Ty Cobb Uncut Panel Schedule Cards With Previously Unknown Pose! Arguably the most inaccessible of all trading cards celebrating the premier batsman of the Dead Ball era, the postcard-sized La Azora Cigar schedule cards have survived the last century with only the smallest of populations. As a matter of fact, it took almost a full century before collectors were even made aware of their existence. There were two different poses of the Detroit Tigers legend--one "fielding" with a schedule for Detroit home games on the back and a "sliding" pose with a schedule for Detroit away games on the back. This incredibly rarity came from a newly-unearthed collection and increased the number of poses and was the first time we saw the cards circulated in the form of uncut panels! This approx. 7 x 5-1/2' 2-card panel features the known 'Sliding' pose plus a new 'relaxing' pose, showing the normally serious and stern Cobb resting comfortably on the field that made him famous, holding the tool that made him a legend. Surprisingly, Cobb is flashing a bright and friendly smile. This full figure portrait is unique to this series and an uncredited postcard. The panel presents at the excellent level with mild corner wear and just one short crease affecting the sliding image. Other condition elements to note are some brief edge wear and the wear along the centerfold line separating the two portraits. The back surfaces are clean and copy is bold and clear. Inducements to "Smoke, after and during the game" and an invitation to "Visit our Model Factory and see how we make the world's best 10c smoke" adorn the backs. It is known La Azora advertised at Tigers Stadium and had a factory in Detroit. This is the only multi-card panel known and is truly a significant find. A must-have for the serious Cobb specialist as well. A 1912 Ty Cobb post card with the same reclining pose is available elsewhere in this auction.
