Description
1912 Boston Garter Christy Mathewson SGC 10 Poor 1. In 1912, Boston Garter released the first of three baseball-themed promotions. The debut effort is now ranked as one of the most unique, colorful and rare card sets ever issued. The sixteen-man checklist consists of one player for each of the existing Major League teams. Each player is depicted either standing or sitting on a chair in the dugout right in the middle of getting dressed after what was surely a well-fought nine-inning battle. Since the advertised product is Boston-brand garters, which are used to hold up men's socks, it is with a slight chuckle that one begins to understand why the players are hanging around in boxer shorts or long underwear, caps, garters (of course) and socks. Their shoes were added in for a sense of modesty. The cards could be bought from retailers or acquired directly from the company. It is believed they were also issued in strips to be used as store displays. The cost was the princely sum of eight for ten cents or sixteen for twenty cents when they were requested via mail. The offered SGC 10 Poor 1 example of baseball legend Christy Mathewson is currently the only graded example found on any and all census reports. We believe there are fewer than a few dozen survivors from this immensely elusive series. Their large dimensions (4" x 8 1/4") and limited original production are two major reasons for their rarity.
Currently, SGC has slabbed just fifteen total cards representing a dozen different players. This rare card displays very nicely. Thankfully, most of the wear and damage affects the reverse side of the card. Pants or no pants, this is a very significant card representing one of the rarest of all type cards in the entire hobby.
