Description

1911 Zeenut PCL Buck Weaver SGC 88 NM/MT 8. The one-year-only association of George Daniel "Buck" Weaver with the PCL's San Francisco Seals is commemorated by this West Coast-issued rarity. In an alluring sepia photo, the collectible presents a full-length pose of a future Major League star, who would soon make a name for himself with the Chicago White Sox. In this priceless illustration, Weaver's cocky, self-assured posture and insouciant expression are those of a person who would somehow, someday -- innocently or not -- become involved in scandal. Sure enough, Buck's on-field success in later years has been unfairly overshadowed by implications of an untoward role in the "Black Sox" controversy of 1919. The passage of years, however, has allowed Weaver to enjoy wide-scale exoneration by both history and the collecting hobby such that, today, his legend remains deservedly strong among baseball cognoscenti.

This unique debut piece picturing Buck Weaver claims exclusive "1 of 1" distinction, standing alone at the apex of its eleven-card SGC census. (PSA has holdered a mere half-dozen of its counterparts, none higher than a "5.") Premium-sized dimensions -- which constitute such a liability in lesser examples from the Zeenut productions -- have exacted no penalties on this outstanding paper antique's quality of preservation: the card concedes no observable corner wear, its image is luscious and clear, and its blank back is pristine. This is a special relic, one that -- in view of its PCL origin, its subject's role in the growth of a National Pastime, and the evocative nature of its background, in general -- soars above the finite realm of "sports cards." It's a piece of Americana, as well as one of those seldom-encountered period souvenirs wherein condition is commensurate with importance.
