    Another pop-two masterpiece!

1911 T5 Pinkerton Cabinets Honus Wagner (Batting) #872 SGC 40 VG 3. While the fabled T206 will always be the tobacco issue most commonly associated with the Old Dutchman, that hobby Grail could be considered downright common next to the all-but-extinct species found here. Like the Cobb representation that will likewise tempt the advanced collector in this Platinum Night event, this Pinkerton Wagner was only available to those intrepid early collectors who made the effort of returning tobacco coupons through the mail in a redemption program. With this mode of distribution assuring a thin population from the start, the passage of over a century has served to narrow the ranks to just two examples verified by the major card grading services. Here we find the superior specimen, rating a solid SGC 40 VG 3. The other specimen resides in a "PSA Authentic" slab.
The full-sized (7-1/2" x 4-3/4") card mount shows one small area of surface roughness, modest wear to three corner tips with bluntness to the fourth. A small stain is apparent on the mount just below Wagner's left foot. The reverse exhibits the faintest of moisture spots, and wear at corners. Thankfully the fragile photo, a marvelous sepia-toned study of the swing that claimed eight National League batting titles, shows only a pair of light creases that remain elusive to the casual viewer. For pure aesthetics, this item could be described as being at the excellent level.
