    Population four, none finer!

1911 T3 Turkey Red Cabinets Christy Mathewson #27 PSA EX-MT 6. "He was an inspiration to everybody and may we have more of his kind," spoke a doleful Kenesaw Mountain Landis at the 1925 memorial service for the future posthumous Hall of Fame inductee. "His sense of justice, his integrity, and sportsmanship made him far greater than Christy Mathewson the pitcher." Though baseball's first Commissioner had been recruited by Major League Baseball to ferret out its worst in the midst of the 1919 Black Sox scandal, Landis was able to recognize the game's best as well, properly honoring this shimmering diamond in the Dead Ball Era rough. It was a sentiment shared by essentially every player, teammate or adversary, which ever encountered Big Six on the playing field.

Few contemporary relics of Matty's prime so effectively capture the nobility of this gentleman athlete, the boyish legend set against an idyllic backdrop of verdant playing field and blue and purple sky. The glorious aesthetics of the T3 issue have earned legions of admirers, but ownership of these special premiums is highly exclusive, and has always been. Only those early collectors intrepid enough to assemble and then redeem by mail a grouping of cigarette coupons before June 30, 1911 earned the prize, and the passage of a century since distribution has whittled that narrow population to a sliver.

Constructed from heavy card stock at 5.5x8" in size, the very nature of the T3 has always rendered it particularly susceptible to damage, but this spectacularly well-preserved specimen stands as a rare exception, one of only four to garner an EX-MT 6 rating from PSA. None have ever ranked higher. Minor corner wear supplies the only content for our condition report, suggesting that this representation teeters on the edge of an upgrade to one-of-one status.
