1911 M110 Sporting Life Cabinets Napoleon "Larry" Lajoie SGC 50 VG/EX 4 - Pop One, Five Higher. The first big star in the upstart American League was Napoleon "Larry" Lajoie. The second baseman, of French-Canadian descent, was also called Nap. He broke into the majors in 1896 with the Philadelphia Phillies, and hit over .300 for five straight seasons with them, then jumped to the new American League team in Philadelphia, the Athletics. Here he set the all-time American League single season mark by batting .426. The next season he was granted free agency and signed with the AL Cleveland Bronchos. Soon the nickname of the team became Naps, and from 1905-1909 he became Cleveland's playing manager. Lajoie won AL batting crowns in 1901, '03, and '04, but then his rival, Ty Cobb, took won the league batting titles in 1906-09. Then came the strangest batting race ever, in 1910 between Lajoie and Cobb. The Georgia Peach had a big lead going down to the last day. Cobb sat out his game and Lajoie had a double-header. Browns' manager Jack O'Connor ordered his third sacker, Red Corriden, to play deep behind the bag, so Lajoie bunted towards third for seven straight hits, later adding a triple. All the cards from the M110 set are extremely scarce, and the colorized set comprises only six cards - all big stars. Graded SGC 50 VG/EX 4. SGC has graded five of the 1911 Sporting Life M110 Cabinets higher than this one. It's a prized item.
