1911 M110 Sporting Life Cabinets "Hal" Chase SGC 60 EX 5 - Hal Chase was remarkably good at first base. He was also a remarkably good hitter, winning the NL batting title in 1916 with a .339 average. He was also remarkedly good at escaping from unsavory situations in which he was accused of being a crooked ball player.

Chase broke into the majors with the New York Highlanders, later Yankees. Once the manager of the team, George Stallings, accused Chase of not giving his best effort in the hope that he could then get Stallings fired and take over the team, which eventually happened. After playing in the Federal League and for the AL White Sox, Chase became player/manager for the Cincinnati Reds. Christy Matthewson, the Reds' manager, accused Chase of betting on baseball and throwing games, and Matthewson suspended him. In various years, a number of players accused Chase of being involved in crooked games, and after his baseball career, he was even indicted by a Chicago Grand Jury in 1920 of being a key part of the Black Sox scandal. He was acquitted. Never the less, Hal Chase was allegedly the most crooked player in baseball history.

Hal Chase was not a choir boy. And if he were, the clergy would be advised to closely guard the collection plate. And if your collection needs the heat generated by a very scarce cabinet card of a great player who was a notoriously bad character, Hal Chase is your man. This Sporting Life Cabinet is one of only two SGC 60 EX 5 examples. There is none higher.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
