1911 M110 Sporting Life Cabinets Christy Mathewson SGC 50 VG/EX 4. A gentleman, Christy Mathewson was a real-life version of the fictional All-American boy, Frank Merriwell. Mathewson was a refined college man from Bucknell at a time when many ball players were uneducated ruffians. Mathewson was plenty tough, though - one of his nicknames, The Bix Six, comes from the name of a famous enormous New York City double-decker fire engine. Mathewson was as honest as they come. And boy, could he pitch. Over 17 big league seasons he had a record of 373-188 with a 2.13 ERA. Pitching almost his entire career as a New York Giant, Mathewson's most miraculous stretch of pitching was during the 1905 World Series when the Giants defeated the Philadelphia Athletics and the Big Six put out the Philadelphia fire when he shut them out in three complete games. When managing Cincinnati in 1918, Mathewson suspended his first baseman, Hal Chase, because Matty accused Chase of betting against his own team and throwing games. Then in the 1919 Black Sox World Series, Mathewson noticed Chase talking with several White Sox players in the lobby of the Hotel Sinton, and in covering the Series for the New York Times, Matty worked with writer Hugh Fullerton to identify suspicious plays. Mathewson was one of the original five Hall of Fame selections.

The 1911 Sporting Life Cabinets are rare finds. The set contained only six cards. Here is Matty, in color, in classic wind-up. Only three of these 1911 Sporting Life Cabinets have been graded higher by SGC, all are one grade higher.
