1910 T210 Old Mill - Series 8 Joe Jackson SGC VG+ 3.5 - From a New to the Hobby Find! Raleigh, North Carolina is a city deep in universities and learning institutions and well as a thriving music and restaurant scene and the annual Krispy Kreme Challenge that combines running five miles and eating a dozen Krispy Kreme Doughnuts. It is also home to the most recent incredibly exciting find of vintage baseball cards. The cards were passed down from his great uncle to his father to our consignor who said, "It's been in the family since it came out of the cigarette pack." The collection remained unknown to our consignor until his father, a lawyer, retired and were found in his office in 2009 - just one year shy of their centennial. The collection contained almost 600 T206 White Border tobacco cards and almost 90 T210 Old Mill cards. They were kept in what our consignor called a "lunch pail." The collection will be offered in this and future Heritage Auctions. About the collection, our consignors' girlfriend said, "None of them are particularly valuable unless you have a Joe Jackson." She will be proven wrong as the highlights will be many but the brightest light is this card - a T210 Old Mill card featuring the mythical "Shoeless" Joe Jackson! The T210 series is the largest set of insert baseball cards produced since the N172 Old Judge series and even outnumbers the famed T206 edition by over one hundred cards. The irony is the T210 series are so much more difficult to acquire and are rarely found in this quantity. Jackson is part of the Eighth (and final) Series of the T210 promotion and is depicted with the New Orleans Pelicans.
Surprisingly, baseball's most natural and possibly greatest hitter was sent back to the minors after playing just ten games for Philadelphia in 1908 and 1909. To call this card rare is an understatement. To date, PSA and SGC have graded a combined 6,500 cards from all eight series. Jackson is represented by less than twenty. The finest recorded example is a VG-EX+ 4.5.
Graded SGC VG+ 3.5. SGC has graded nine T210 Joe Jackson cards, this is the lone VG+ with a trio rating higher and none above the VG-EX+ level. As to be expected, the card displays some corner wear and some mild edge wear and most will feel this doesn't matter at all. His central portrait is centered maybe a 1/32" away from perfection and there is not a speck of surface loss, scuffing soiling or staining. It has taken more than a century for this card to find a new home where we are sure it will be appreciated, admired, and hopefully passed down through family for another century for it is a card as timeless as the man himself has become.
