One of only eight in the SGC population!
1910 T210 Old Mill Cigarettes Series 8 Joe Jackson SGC Good
2. It took the greatest scandal in the history of our National
Pastime to redefine Joe Jackson. He had been, for the last full
decade of the Dead Ball Era, simply the greatest hitter on the
planet, a distinction assigned to him by those best able to do so,
the men who aspired to the title themselves. But where legends like
Cobb and Williams turned a scientific eye to the process,
deconstructing that fragment of a second that separates success
from failure into parts far too small for the mere mortal to see,
Jackson's approach was far less cerebral. An illiterate child
laborer from the rural South, he was the prototypical "natural,"
the beneficiary of a gift from God that would be invoiced with a
debt of ignominy yet to be forgiven. The recent centennial of the Black Sox scandal has done little to quiet the debate over culpability, and compelling evidence of Jackson's innocence survives in his World Series stat line. Clearly the passage of more than one hundred years has eliminated any hope for a definitive answer, a fact which then begs what is arguably the more pertinent question--is the game improved by this unyielding fidelity to Judge Landis' grudge?
The offered rarity finds the twenty-two year old outfielder engaged in the decade-long climb toward the lofty ledge from which he'd fall. His 136 games with the 1910 New Orleans Pelicans would represent his final term of minor league ball before he'd return to the Majors for good with a scorching .408 average for the 1911 Cleveland Naps, second only to the great Ty Cobb in the American League.
Typical corner rounding and wear to the full-bleed red borders account for the listed grade, but the crisp image registration and clean surfaces draw the eye away from these common distractions. Much like our opinion upon his century of banishment, we're convinced that the rarity and magnificence of this subject should more than make up for a few faults. A profoundly significant commemorative of one of the sport's most talented and tragic figures. Graded SGC Good 2.
