Description

1910 Novelty Cutlery Christy Mathewson PSA Good+ 2.5 - Only Six PSA Graded Examples. From the John Esch collection. In 1873, Americans saw the first postal cards issued pre-stamped by the government. Commercial or privately printed cards were called "postcards" and needed postage added to them. The first postal card featured the Interstate Industrial Exposition held in Chicago. They were produced by The Morgan Envelope Factory based in Springfield, Massachusetts. The first collectible picture postcards appeared in 1893 at the World's Columbian Exposition or World's Fair which was also held in Chicago from May to October of that year. The idea was a popular one as it didn't take long for the picture postcard to experience its Golden Age which started in 1905. Millions of postcards were printed with official USPS records showing around 700 million postcards were mailed in the United States from 1907 - 1908. Of what was a multitude of themes, baseball scenes and players, like the candy and tobacco insert cards of the same era, was very popular.

In 1910, a set of twenty-five post cards was produced by the Novelty Cutlery Co. of Canton Ohio. This series featured the greatest players of the time and have remained very scarce and very popular. The Black & White cards are easily identified by the classical styled frame which encompasses each central portrait.

This auction features a 23-card near set from the collection of John Esch. The cards are remarkably fresh looking and (with one exception) have obviously remained together for well over a century now, all stored in an album. The effects of storage are reflected in their technical grades but those fail miserably when one factors in their visual brilliance.

Offered is one of baseball's greatest pitchers - Christy Mathewson, mound ace of the New York Giants. Graded PSA Good+ 2.5. Only six total examples have been graded by PSA. This is he only card graded GOOD+ with two rated higher.
