Description

1910 E98 "Set of 30" Ty Cobb Red PSA Gem Mint 10 - Pop Three! It's not one of the more famous issues of the Dead Ball Era, but that's part of the reason that we love it. With well-deserved deference to the tobacco issues that dominate the late 19th and early 20th century cardboard calendar, the candy cards of the day offer some of The Standard Catalog's most compelling graphics, notably the iconic Cracker Jack entries of 1914 and 1915, and this E98 issue that echoes its bold aesthetics.

This Cobb card, in particular, commands attention for its rare attention to the defensive half of Ty Cobb's game. While the Georgia Peach was in the midst of a nine-season streak of American League batting championships when this card was issued, a fact that would validate any art director's decision to choose a batting image, this deviation from the norm is a huge part of its appeal. It's a rather unusual fielding image as well, Cobb stretched to his limit by a towering liner that failed to escape his leaping grasp.

But the condition is undeniably the most compelling trait of this particular specimen, which enters its twelfth decade of existence seemingly untouched by the rough hands of Father Time. There is literally not a single deviation from the card's condition upon rolling off a factory floor during the Taft administration, and perfect registration and centering take the card the rest of the way home to the loftiest perch available in the PSA scale, joined by just two other pristine siblings. Graded PSA Gem Mint 10.
