Description

1910 E98 "Set of 30" Ty Cobb (Red) "Black Swamp Find" PSA NM-MT 8 - The "Lowest" Graded Cobb.  The legend of Tyrus Raymond Cobb is familiar to all. His 4,000+ hits, lifetime .367 batting average and steel personality are all ingredients of the most flavorful lore in all of baseball. Mere words don't seem suitably appropriate for a card such as this. A monumentally impressive piece that few only dreamed could exist. With this unique find, 74 of the more than 1,250 E98's encased in PSA holders bear a Mint 9 label, this card is the 'lowest' graded example and the difference between this card and the others is debatable. Before anyone uttered the term 'Black Swamp' the best E98 Cobb was a lone PSA 7. With almost all of this issue grading a 6 or lower, collectors have been trained to believe that ultra-high quality cards from this most admired Caramel issue simply did not exist outside one collector's holdings. This E98 Ty Cobb is graded PSA NM-MT 8 and ranks as the low man on a totem pole of the highest quality. It's condition is as are all the others, simply put... brand new.

1910 E98 "Set of 30" Black Swamp Find - #16 on the PSA Set Registry - 6.59 Grade Average!

The "Black Swamp" find and the task of auctioning the collection were unprecedented in the hobby. The game plan was to sell the best-of-the-best of the over twenty complete sets of player/color combinations first, amid much fanfare, and continue until the lowest-graded set was ready to be auctioned. In Black Swamp language, "lowest" is a relative term. Feedback by many was to wait until this last set came to auction thinking they would represent the best bargain. Heritage has decided to call a quarterback sneak of sorts by offering that set now, the lowest Black Swamp set generating a grade average of 6.59. To put that in perspective, that average is a full grade and a half over the #1 pre-Black Swamp E98 registered set. As you view the lots that follow, you will have to remind yourself more than a few times that, yes, these stunning cards are the bottom of that nearly pristine barrel, your best chance at a budget-friendly purchase from the greatest hobby find of recent memory.
