1910 E98 "Set of 30" Ty Cobb Red Background SGC 96 Mint 9 from "The Black Swamp Find." Now a household name among collectors with a concentration in prewar cardboard, "The Black Swamp Find" burst upon the hobby scene just over a year ago, providing a pristine time capsule of candy cards from the heart of the sport's Dead Ball Era. Banner headlines screamed from every hobby periodical and the mainstream press followed suit, with stories in hundreds of Associated Press affiliates and a live appearance on NBC's "The Today Show." Unquestionably the Find rates as the most significant of the twenty-first century thus far, and it would take quite a revelation to dislodge the Black Swamp from that throne. It's a pedigree that should be absent from no serious collection in the theme.

Presented is one of the top specimens from a collection built of nothing but pristine components. Like most contemporary issues, the E98 set asserts the Cobb as its key entry, and the offered example ranks as one of the three finest on the planet. The differentiation between this Mint 9 example (one of two to earn such a judgment by SGC) and the sole representation to garner a Gem 10 designation from SGC comes down to millimeters of variation in the stark white borders. In every other regard--corners, edges, registration of the printing--this card is quite literally unimprovable. Heritage Auctions has previously sold "Mint" examples in excess of $35,000.00.
