Description

1910 E98 "Set of 30" Ty Cobb (Black Swamp) SGC Gem Mint 10. Now a household name among collectors with a concentration in prewar cardboard, "The Black Swamp Find" burst upon the hobby scene in the Heritage August 2012 "Platinum Night" auction, providing a pristine time capsule of candy cards from the heart of the sport's Dead Ball Era. Banner headlines screamed from every hobby periodical and the mainstream press followed suit, with stories in hundreds of Associated Press affiliates and a live appearance on NBC's "The Today Show." Unquestionably the Find rates as the most significant of the twenty-first century thus far, and it would take quite a revelation to dislodge the Black Swamp from that throne. It's a pedigree that should be absent from no serious collection in the theme.

As has been well-reported, the cards were located in a forgotten box in a dusty attic, each player and color variation individually stacked and bound in twine. Twenty-eight players were represented in total, with five players appearing in a second color for a total of thirty-three stacks.

There was only one color background for the Cobb, the rather appropriate shade of blood red that finds the long-reigning Hit King in a rare fielding posture. With a total of fourteen Ty Cobb representations from the Black Swamp earning a Mint 9 rating, this single example separates itself from the pack to be the pick of that outrageous litter by garnering the nearly unattainable Gem Mint 10 designation.

As such, it is safe to call this the finest Ty Cobb candy card that exists, one that, like the Peach himself, took no shortcuts to its position of supremacy. It's the ultimate one-of-one, representing the highest elevation of card collecting achievement. Graded SGC Gem Mint 10.
