1910 E98 "Set of 30" Honus Wagner Green Background SGC 96 Mint 9 from "The Black Swamp Find." Green with envy? Hardly. Though the E98 issue may have developed an inferiority complex due to all the collector love directed at its T206 contemporary, this Mint 9 Wagner is far prettier than even the famous Gretzky-McNall Wagner from Big Tobacco's most celebrated set. It's one of the four finest of its kind deriving from the illustrious "Black Swamp Find," discovered in Defiance, Ohio just over a year ago. Today, ownership of a specimen slabbed beneath that pedigreed header is an essential calling card for the advanced collector, with no top hobbyist willing to be caught dead without one.

Like the other Black Swamp cards presented in the Live portion of this Platinum Night Auction, the absence of a Gem 10 rating is due only to all but imperceptible imperfections in centering or other slight deficiencies in the printing process. Not a single deviation from the cards' appearance upon their date of birth is to be found. We'll be lucky to live to see another discovery to rival this ultimate attic find. Heritage Auctions has previously sold a green "Mint" Wagner from this find for $47,800.
