Description

1910 D322 Tip Top Bread Honus Wagner SGC VG-EX 4. While the issue may not be familiar to the casual collector, the image most assuredly is. It's an artful reimagining of Carl Horner's definitive photographic portrait, the same image utilized for the creation of the short-printed T206 tobacco card which serves as the hobby's most coveted and valuable cardboard. Though the Tip Top issue has never achieved the pronounced level of fame that the industry's leading tobacco set enjoys, it's a strong contender in considerations of scarcity, aesthetics and historical import.

The regional distribution accounts for the intense scarcity today (as well, of course, as the passage of eleven decades since production). This set was crafted to celebrate the 1909 World Series Champs for the Pittsburgh market, packaged with loaves of bread for Steeltown sandwich eaters. Fewer than 700 specimens from the entire issue appear in the SGC population, and this is one of just three Wagners at the VG-EX 4 level, bested by only five. The image area is in world-class condition, with imperfect left-right centering and minor corner wear accounting for the points lost. Graded SGC VG-EX 4.
