Description

1910 D322 Tip Top Bread Honus Wagner PSA EX 5. While the issue may not be familiar to the casual collector, the image most assuredly is. It's an artful reimagining of Carl Horner's definitive photographic portrait, the same image utilized for the creation of the short-printed T206 tobacco card which serves as the hobby's most coveted and valuable cardboard. Though the Tip Top issue has never achieved the pronounced level of fame that the industry's leading tobacco set enjoys, it's a strong contender in considerations of scarcity, aesthetics and historical import.

In fact, the offered trading card makes the legendary T206 look common by comparison, as thirty-six of them reside within a PSA capsule while the full population of Tip Top Wagners stands at just thirty-four. This is one of three examples at the EX 5 level, with only one superior (at EX+ 5.5.).

It's the regional distribution that accounts for the intense scarcity today (as well, of course, as the passage of eleven decades since production). This set was crafted to celebrate the 1909 World Series Champs for the Pittsburgh market, packaged with loafs of bread for Steeltown sandwich eaters. Fewer than 500 specimens from the entire issue appear in the PSA population, and this is the finest example of its most desirable entry. Typical edge and corner wear and imperfect left/right centering account for the grade, leaving the image area clean and beautiful.
