Description
1910-11 T3 Turkey Red Cabinets Ty Cobb #9 Checklist Back PSA EX 5. Only the most generously sized canvas -- such as that afforded by the beloved T3's -- was capable of successfully capturing the essence of a turn-of-the-century player and sharing the results with the observer. That magical quality is ably demonstrated by this gorgeous Cobb example, where the great hitter's posed likeness manages to impart every iota of his competitive fire and zeal for excellence. Strictly speaking, the premium's illustration -- done in the finest colors and conceding no trace of impairment in the manifestation of its artistry -- shows a man, standing, holding a bat. But a single second of concentration reveals far more. Cobb's demeanor appears to pulsate with intensity, as if, even within the context of a still photo, he's determined not to be outdone. There's no home plate in the picture, but that doesn't seem to matter to an athlete whose grim look shows that every ounce of preparation for game action is nevertheless alive and ready. The power of the scene is reinforced by fields of orange in the image's distant sky, and by the manner in which the grass and dirt field fade, as the viewer is drawn irresistibly to the center ... where Cobb returns the gaze. Just one look at this card will cause any sentient onlooker to be transfixed by its almost otherworldly properties, and mesmerized by the immortal figure's projection of will. It's an amazing phenomenon, and one that is summoned forth by few objects of any kind--let alone a baseball card. One of less than a dozen copies at its very favorable level (with six higher, among a total census of 67 copies), the abilities of this design to enthrall the observer retain full potency in this abundantly appealing specimen. Natural and inoffensive corner touches constitute no impediment with respect to the viewer's enjoyment of the piece's superior overall aesthetic, and instances of "attic toning" at the border's right and bottom edges are negligible in terms of importance. The reverse -- with its text defining the T3 promotion's parameters and a checklist itemizing Baseball and Boxing subjects from #'s 1 to 76, inclusive -- is boldly struck with all of its characters undisturbed.
